This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy.
An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation; any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.
In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Drivers' License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.

A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.
Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.
Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query.
Upon hire, this position also requires applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy.
The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding.
An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements.
The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the chemical herbicide program and/or the assembly and erection of highway signs as needed.
Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
Maintains records of operation.
Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates vehicles and a variety of medium and heavy equipment.
Performs preventative maintenance and pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment operated.
Performs light maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
Performs manual labor in the maintenance of highways, bridges and other highway facilities while utilizing a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools.
Motivates crew members to improve the quality of work performed and assists in the evaluation of others.
Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in crew meetings.
Trains crew members in basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of mathematical calculations; knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures; knowledge of the procedures, knowledge of techniques and use of medium/heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures; knowledge of crew leading principles and practices.
Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools; skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on medium/heavy equipment and vehicles; skilled in filling out reports and forms and maintaining accurate records; skilled in communicating both verbally and in writing, skilled in including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to train others; ability to read and understand job-related materials; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds; ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis; ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic; ability to stand for an extended period of time; ability to work independently and make job related decisions.
OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary.
While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
Obtains and maintains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level.
Possess a valid Class E driver's license and obtain a Class B CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class B CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
All herbicide applicators shall be licensed by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs in three areas:
core curriculum, right of way, and aquatics.
The Department will allow an employee under the direct supervision of a licensed applicator to train and gain experience for a period not to exceed twelve months, after which they shall be licensed.
MINIMUM
Qualifications:
Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
One year experience in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire.
A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
