Staff The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 2 with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.
The Ophthalmic Technician 2 assists the ophthalmologist by gathering basic data pertaining to the patient's visual status and maintaining an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient, quality eye care.
The Ophthalmic Technician 2 also performs appropriate clinical testing techniques to detect visual deficiencies.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS o Prepares exam rooms for daily clinical activities.
o Monitors and maintains the appropriate levels of minor equipment, dry goods, and pharmaceuticals in clinic.
o Responsible for detailed documentation in the EMR system.
o Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
o Examines eye for abnormalities.
o Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
o Measures intraocular pressure of eyes.
o Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.
o Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment.
Completes intravitreal injection (IVI) preparation for patients.
o Administers placement of hard and soft contact lenses.
Performs technical workups and special testing.
o Serves as a Certified Ophthalmic Scribe or a Certified National Study Ophthalmic Technician.
o Assist with training and onboarding clinical support staff.
o Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions:
o Ensures exam room is properly prepared for daily clinical activities including equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals.
o Safely manages patient flow to ensure timely delivery of care.
o Utilizes two patient identifiers at all times and proactively communicates with team members.
o Exercises sound judgment and clinical experience to independently perform basic ophthalmology evaluations including ocular history taking, visual acuity assessment, manual or autorefraction, intraocular pressure assessment, slit lamp, ocular motility, pupillary function, and glare test/PAP/pachymetry.
o Assists Ophthalmologists or Optometrists, as needed.
o Transcribe the impression and plan, results of tests, prescriptions, and orders.
o Document any procedure that may be performed by Ophthalmologists or Optometrists.
