With approximately 2,100 miles of canals and 2,000 miles of levees/berms, 77 pump stations and more than 600 water control structures and 620 project culverts, the District actively operates and maintains the water management system to protect regional water supplies and provide flood control for 9 million people - plus the environment, agriculture, businesses, and visitors - in South Florida.
The Modeling Section of Hydrology and Hydraulics (H&H) Bureau at South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is looking for Systems Data Modelers.
These positions require a solid working knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling theories, concepts, and practices for projects/processes that support the Bureau's mission.
The successful candidate's working knowledge has been developed based on formal and on-the-job training programs.
Incumbent demonstrates technical competence by suitable application of standard modeling procedures and techniques; technical competence is also developed by keeping abreast of industry trends/developments.
It is desirable for the incumbent to have a good working knowledge and basic experience with water management in Florida.
Incumbent receives direction and moderate supervision that includes instructions on specific assignment objectives and is expected to use discretion and judgment to complete modeling assignments and solve technical problems, either independently or as part of a team.
Incumbent applies feedback on work assignments to enhance professional development and is responsible for keeping immediate supervisor current on the status of deliverables and assignments.
This is a joint posting for 3 open positions at any combination of SDM1 and SDM2 levels.
Any of these positions may be filled as an in-office at SFWMD Headquarters or remote position (nationwide based from home).
Incumbent must demonstrate the following qualities:
Knowledge and experience in Hydrology and Hydraulics (H&H) modeling; Ability to produce successful solution to H&H problems, by application of models to complex problems, preferably in south Florida; Robust skills in the use of statistical tools, databases, spreadsheets and programming; overall strong computational skills; Proficiency in communication and documentation of modeling products, techniques and processes related to the application of models in support of projects; Ability to communicate technical subjects to both technical and non-technical audiences; Ability to assist with planning, developing and carrying out scopes of work for moderately complex scientific processes or specific portions or phases of a larger, moderately complex scientific project that support water resources management and environmental restoration initiatives; Capability to work independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary (engineers, scientists, planners, policy-makers, etc.
) team; Aptitude to acquire additional proficiency in learning new software languages, software library packages, related technologies (at times) under steep learning conditions, and willingness to learn new modeling skills pertinent to the Bureau's mission.
Employment Guidelines:
Degree in Physical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science or Mathematics and experience that demonstrates measurable career progression related to hydrologic process modeling, simulation modeling, data science, mathematics, or statistics.
The candidate must have proven experience developing programs, scripts or applications to support complex workflows, and troubleshooting computer code and data.
Incumbent supports the District's emergency Management operations as assigned.
Typical assignments may include participation on Secondary Assessment Team, Debris Removal Team, Citizens Information Line, or Planning Section of Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
Having demonstrated leadership capabilities, the incumbent may be assigned to oversee, direct or guide work of lower level scientists, engineers, systems data modelers or technical support staff.
Systems Data Modeler 2 (Senior Engineer or Senior Scientist):
Bachelor's Degree or higher from an ABET/EAC accredited engineering program OR has Bachelor's Degree or higher in mathematics, statistics, or the sciences and 6 years of professional experience.
Licenses for Senior Engineer:
Valid State of Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license and keeps licensure status current.
Valid State of Florida Driver's License.
Licenses for Senior Scientist:
Valid State of Florida Driver's License.
Systems Data Modeler 1 (Staff Scientist):
Bachelor's Degree or higher in mathematics, statistics, or the sciences OR Bachelor's Degree or higher from an ABET/EAC accredited engineering program and 2
years of professional experience.
Licenses for Staff Scientist:
Valid State of Florida Driver's License.
Physical Requirements / Working Environment:
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
