The Critical-care nurse relies upon a specialized body of knowledge, skills, and experience to provide care to patients and families and create environments that are healing, humane, and caring in the critical care setting. Foremost, the critical-care nurse practices according to the standards of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The nurse is able to provide in-depth assessment with nursing diagnosis pertinent to the critically ill patients. Initiates all treatment modalities in the critical care setting and is competent in the titration, administration, and monitoring of patients receiving vasoactive medication. Possesses the knowledge to make quick decision based on hemodynamic and physiologic response determined by advanced assessment skills and experience in the critical care area. Observes and assesses patient's clinical conditions; recognizes, anticipates, identifies and interprets emergency situations, initiates immediate appropriate action, and ACLS protocol as indicated. The nurse caring for the critically ill patient uses clinical inquiry and integrates research findings into practice. Continually questions and evaluates practice and uses the best available evidence. Demonstrates competence and knowledge in their response to multi-system failure, cardiovascular, and respiratory failure as well as the indicated treatment for improved outcomes. Ensures that ventilators, monitors and other types of medical equipment function properly, collaborates with fellow members of the critical care team. Cares for patient's pre and post-operative surgical patients requiring advanced monitoring in the critical care setting. Critical-care nurse has education and training beyond their basic preparation as a registered nurse (RN) to meet the needs of patients and families who are experiencing critical illness. Critical-care nurses complete a critical-care training course or orientation that includes essential information on the care of the critically ill patient. Possess complex assessment skills, familiar with high-intensity therapies and interventions and provides continuous nursing vigilance. Work Schedule:

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
