The incumbent is assigned to the Facilities Management Service at the West Palm Beach, Florida VA Medical Center (VAMC) as a full journeyman Plumber. Incumbent is subject to callback for any emergency conditions which may arises outside of his/her regular tour of duty. Specifically he/she is responsible for the installation, modify, maintenance and repair of new and existing systems of water (hot and cold distribution systems), sewers, chemical waste drains, identification test to avoid cross connections, analysis pressure and flow tests, regulators, water fountains, hot water tanks, water closets, shower components, tubs disposal systems utilities (water, gas, compressed air, medical gases (air, oxygen and vacuums), oil lines, fire sprinkle systems, hydrants, well systems filter systems, distilled water system), emergency showers valves, eye wash units, flush valves, landscape irrigation sprinkles systems, strainer, oral evacuation, water purification systems, Canteen equipment, dietetics equipment, laundry equipment, grease traps, sanitary waste disposal lift station systems, backflow prevention devices. Duties also including soldering, brazing, repairing and replacing sections of pipe and or coverings, duct insulation and maintaining hanger spacing for proper level and scope. Occasionally the incumbent will assist and be supervised by a higher grade pipefitter in repairing, replacing, testing, installing steam traps, valves, strainers, regulators, metal fabrication, replacing of existing piping and coving/insulation. Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, replaces, services, installs, modifies fabricates cleans, adjusts, tests, lubricates, trouble shoots, building service and portable equipment requiring water, steam gas, or air connections all items in the scope of his/her duties. These include such items as plumbing and heating fixtures, pumps, thermostatic and pneumatic controls, waters stills, autoclaves sterilizers, glass washers, sanitizers, etc. Maintains necessary logs and records for each unit of equipment or segment of system on which work or inspection is performed, noting date of inspection, condition of unit, work performed parts replaced, man-hours worked, etc. Performs investigation of defects or malfunctions of water systems, drainage systems and gas systems and gas systems including piping and all auxiliary equipment. Eliminates defects or malfunctions, like leaks by repacking valves, replacing faulty fittings or sections of pipe, by joining, sealing and testing systems and equipment for proper pressures, leak-free joints and operations. Incumbent is classified as an essential employee and as such is expected to report for duty when non-essential employees are excused for cogent reasons. Is subject to call around-the-clock for duty to assist in correcting problems in emergency situations. Work Schedule:

Subject position requires a thorough knowledge and skill in use of the full range of plumbing methods used in the plumber trade and the operation and installation of various systems and equipment. Work requires ability to apply mathematical formulas, inspection, reading and interpretation of blueprints and shop drawings to layout, cutting, assembling and independent installation of ne piping and equipment or checking existing systems.
Experience:
A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The incumbent makes repairs and installation from ladders, scaffolding and platforms and hard to reach places such as crawl spaces, attics, etc. This requires him or her to stand, stoop bend, kneel climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May be required to crawl over and/or under equipment/service lines to access work assigned. He/she may lift and move up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items weighing 75 pound with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Occasionally works on high ceilings, holding heavy power tools overhead or at arm's length. Incumbent must be alert at all times to recognize potential hazards and must be able to identify colors as established by the American Standards for identification of piping systems, hazardous liquids and gasses and mechanical equipment. The incumbent is classified as an essential employee and as such is expected to report for duty when non-essential employees are excuse for cogent reasons. WORKING CONDITIONS:
The incumbent works either inside or outside and is usually dirty, dusty and greasy. The plumber is sometimes required to make repairs, installations outside in bad weather, in areas where bad smelling fumes are present and at times must wear self-contained breathing apparatus. There is frequent expose to possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions, Incumbent has occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones, scrapes, cuts, bruises burns and infections.
