Physician (Chief of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine)
Sections include:
Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Point of Care Testing, Microbiology, Transfusion Medicine, Autopsy, Histology, Cytopathology, and Surgical Pathology. Major Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Supervision of developing, planning, clarifying, administering and managing all Pathology and Laboratory areas of the Medical Center. - As the Laboratory Director, responsible for continuous readiness for accreditation and compliance to the TJC and other regulatory standards. - Collaborates with various discipline-specific Chiefs of Service to ensure support of appropriate staffing standards. - Develops plans for adjusting provider productivity and staffing, timeliness of care, telehealth, and patient access, as needed. - Participate in Medical Center wide activities and projects that involve older Veterans and service on Medical Center committees. - Supervise a group of employees performing work at various levels within Title 5 and Title 38 to include administrative officer, secretary, and providers (MD). - Provide administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit/service including outreach efforts and VA Clinic involvement at other sites within the Health Care System. - Responsibility for administrative supervision of residents and fellows assigned to programs. Collaboration with program coordinators and academic affiliation partners is required to provide a successful learning environment. - Establish guidelines and performance expectations for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system. - Assists State, local, and private agencies, and universities monitoring activities, program reviews, and the development and analysis of information. - Establish systems and procedures to monitor and control the financial resources assigned to P&LMS. - Manage staff training to ensure that required training is accomplished for purposes of maintaining ongoing skills, new developments in the field, orientation of staff to the VA, and The Joint Commission and Long-Term Care Institute requirements and Licensing. - Develops and monitors Functional Statements/Position Descriptions, staffing levels, Cost Distribution Reports (CDR) allocations, Decision Support System (DSS) mapping and monitoring. - Writes pathology reports summarizing analyses, results, and conclusions. Communicates pathologic findings to surgeons or other physicians. Work Schedule:

United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Experience:
The candidate should have clinical expertise in either clinical chemistry, toxicology, molecular pathology, microbiology, informatics, or transfusion medicine and several years of experience directing a clinical pathology service or laboratory section. The selected candidate will be board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Reference:

The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 2 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending.
